SINGAPORE : Some Singaporeans living in Brisbane say they are shocked at the damage to their properties following the recent floods.

The swamped Australian city on Friday began the heartbreaking task of cleaning up after its worst floods in decades.

More than 26,000 homes were flooded, electricity remained cut off to thousands of homes, and key roads were still blocked.

Many Singaporeans living in Australia’s third largest city, who were in Singapore for holidays, were also affected.

Prof Sushila Chang, a Brisbane resident, said: “About three days ago, the concierge of my apartment wrote me an e-mail saying that the floods are coming – could everyone remove their cars from the basement carpark.

“Subsequently, a few hours later, I had an e-mail from her telling me that it’s too late, the basement carpark has been inundated and … (my) car is gone.”

Others received similar bad news.

Another Brisbane resident, Syed Ghazaly Syed Agil, said: “Our apartment is just about 20 metres from the river. The whole first floor was flooded and my personal belongings which I’d put at the first level, they were all gone.”

But they were thankful not to be in Brisbane when the disaster struck.

Prof Chang said: “Because if I was there, I would have no electricity, like the friend whom I called yesterday. She sounded so stressed, she said she has not slept. She’s only got a torchlight, and the house is wet and musty.”

Syed Ghazaly said: “My heart now goes with the people of Brisbane and I’m looking forward to be back in Brisbane next month and do my bid in cleaning up Brisbane and restoring Queensland to its previous glory – known as the ‘Sunshine State.'”

Brisbane officials said that reconstruction efforts could take up to two years.
