Singapore – Over nine in 10 children living in Singapore prefer to spend more time with their family than making money while becoming a football player is kids’ top career choice.

The fifth annual Children’s Career Survey conducted by Adecco Singapore has found that 96% of children, aged between seven to 14, said it’s more important to spend time with family than making money. This is a slight increase from last year’s 93%. One respondent explained, “Money can buy you a cool car…but without family, there is no one to sit with you in the cool car.”

The most popular career choice children living here aspire to be is a football player, with respondents expecting a monthly salary from S$1500 right up to S$3 million. This reflects the kids’ growing interest, possibly generated from the recent FIFA World Cup and English Premier League.

The second and third most popular career choices for kids are doctors and police officers. Last year’s top career choice, lawyer, has dropped to fourth place. Rounding up the list was vets, pet shop owners and scientists.

Other “cool” jobs children want to have are a theme park employee, dinosaur hunter and creator of chocolate. One young girl felt that the “coolest job” to have was one “where there are no limits to what you are capable of and where you have fun, enjoy your working environment and are able to be yourself”.

Lynne Ng, regional director for Adecco South East Asia, said the survey has revealed that children have become more family-oriented while not losing sight of their ambitions. She added, “The findings this year also show the children to be more caring about the environment that they live in and wanting to help others that may be less fortunate than themselves”.

Lastly, kids being kids, the top things they look forward to in 2011 are getting a girlfriend, “receiving enough ang pow to buy an iPhone” and “going to Universal Studios again and again”.

And if they are lucky enough to become the Prime Minister of Singapore, the first thing some would do is:

– Make the island bigger

– Change the law to allow 12 year-olds to drive

– Make charitable donations compulsory

– Import more Korean K-pop music for Singaporeans to enjoy

– Ensure that we are a nation of kind people

– Air-condition the entire nation

– Push for more electric cars and buses

– Sit on my new chair and relax!
