Asean to study bid for 2030 World Cup
IT COULD be a dream come true for millions of football fans in the region.
Asean foreign ministers have agreed to study a possible joint bid to host the Fifa World Cup in 2030.
A statement released on Monday by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said that the ministers, who met at a just-concluded retreat in Lombok, Indonesia, ‘discussed the possibility of a joint Asean bid to host the Fifa World Cup’. The statement did not elaborate.

World Cup to be held in Asean
But Asean’s Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan wrote on his Twitter blog that the move was part of ‘community-building efforts’.
‘This is a good way to boost our unity,’ Mr Surin was also quoted as saying in The Jakarta Post newspaper. He noted that football was the most popular sport in Asean, with tens of millions of fans.
He said that Malaysia had been tasked to come up with a detailed proposal by the foreign ministers.
