What is the likelihood of a bus crushing your 3 toes?

INFORMATION technology technician Derek Li is left with a crushed foot and had to have three of his toes amputated after the front wheel of an off-duty SBS Transit bus crushed his foot in an accident outside Hougang Plaza on Nov 29 last year.

Mr Li, 27, was crossing a road junction when the traffic lights turned green in his favour but the bus failed to stop to give way to him.

His three toes were amputated by Dec 12 last year. He has been in three hospitals since the incident, and does not know when he can be discharged.

Mr Li is expected to be able to walk again using both feet but must wear a special shoe fitted for his left foot. Currently, he needs the help of a wheelchair to negotiate longer distances.

SBS Transit’s corporate communications senior vice-president Tammy Tan said the company is helping Mr Li with his medical and hospitalisation expenses.

A reader named Stefanie on Asia’s leading citizen-journalism website STOMP said: ‘A young lad with a great future has been staying in hospital for three months, thanks to an irresponsible driver. This is yet another accident caused by a public bus.’
